Five things that damage a fur coat
Fur garments need special care. Almost everything that damages them happens at home, without anyone noticing.
1. The sun
Prolonged exposure to sunlight dries out the pelt and dulls the colour of the hair.
2. Humidity
Excessive humidity damages the pelt and the lining.
3. Direct heat
Direct sources of heat, such as radiators or fireplaces, dry out the pelt.
4. Perfume
Perfume can damage the hair of the garment.
5. Perspiration and spilt liquids
They build up on collars and cuffs. That is why fur garments should be cleaned once a year.
Cleaning is done by drumming and brushing, which give the hair back its fall and its shine. And in summer, cold storage: from 1 May to 15 November, at a controlled temperature.
I recommend avoiding all of the above and planning a yearly clean. — Carlos Criado, master furrier.
Is your coat due a clean?
We do it in our workshop and, if you like, it can stay in cold storage all summer.
